Hybrid-SACD

“…this is an extremely pleasing and collectable disc. This first instalment in a new Brahms series from Edward Gardner showcases the Bergen string section along with impeccable ensemble playing from the orchestra. Recorded in Chandos’ splendid surround sound idiom.”

“… Gardner’s view of the music [Symphony No. 1] allows him to observe the seldom-heard repeat of the first stage without stretching the piece out unduly … The outer movements of the Symphony No. 3 are again refreshingly lithe, while Gardner’s lingering performances of the middle movements are particularly beautiful.”

“This is Brahms interpretation in excelsis. Gardner seems to me to have judged every tempo right, and to combine the powerful momentum and flexibility that Brahms demands with passionate attention to detail… Under his inspirational guidance, the Bergen Philharmonic players give their all.”
